Origins and Identity
Princess Ngoc Hoa, known in Japan as Anio-san, was the adopted daughter of Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen. She became a symbol of the golden age of Hoi An’s international trade in the early 17th century, bridging the cultures of Dang Trong and Japan through her historic and symbolic presence.
The Historic Marriage
In 1619, Lord Nguyen arranged her marriage to the Japanese merchant Araki Sotaro. This union was more than a personal bond; it was a remarkable milestone in the diplomatic and commercial relations between the two nations, trust-building that lasted for generations.
A Lasting Heritage in Nagasaki
Known affectionately as Anio-san, she spent 26 years in Nagasaki. Today, her presence is still felt during the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival, where the ceremonial procession escorts her back home on a voyage that transcends time and space, honoring the friendship she pioneered.
